SURGICAL PEDIATRIC UROLOGY

In 2011, IOWD developed a pediatric urology surgical program, in response to the number of children needing surgery.  As demand for complex reconstructive cases increased, IOWD established a relationship with Rwanda Military Hospital and King Faisal Hospital to operate at these hospitals.  The program has gradually expanded and offers a wonderful opportunity for pediatric reconstructive surgeons to make a lasting difference in patients’ lives.  Our pediatric urologists work with the team of trained urologists in Rwanda and teach technique to the Rwandan surgical residents, including those who are currently completing their training in urology.

In 2011 there was only one Urologist in a country of 9 million. Now there are 10 trained Urologists and a 5 year residency program, with 2 trainees a year. I am most proud of contributing to the training and development of this program and performing hundreds of pediatric urologic procedures for the children and training Rwandan Doctors in their techniques.
