CESAREAN SECTION PROGRAM

Obstetric fistula is closely associated with injury to the bladder and ureters during cesarean section, therefore our obstetricians are involved in the primary prevention of fistula by teaching safe cesarean section technique through IOWD’s Safe Cesarean Section Program. This highly successful education program has been implemented at Kibagabaga Hospital, both in the classroom and in the operating room.  During the program, students, interns, and general practitioners work one on one with IOWD obstetricians in the operating room to learn, enhance, and perfect their cesarean technique.  In addition, we routinely lecture on ultrasound and management of obstetric conditions such as hemorrhage, preeclampsia, vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC), and abnormal labor. Our educational programs utilize various media platforms to reach as many local providers as possible. For instance, an educational video demonstrating proper cesarean section technique jointly produced by IOWD and Brigham & Women’s Hospital (Massachusetts, USA) is available online at no cost.
